How Does Acne Happen? - First Things First

We all get acne, unfortunately, some people get it way worse than others. You may be asking yourself what actually causes acne?

Well, here is the short answer.

Acne does not start out as acne, acne is the end product of a whole host of other bodily functions gone wrong. Acne starts out in the pilosebaceous unit. This is home to the hair and hair follicle and also a little gland called the sebaceous gland. there are hundreds of thousands of these all over your body as you can imagine.

Usually the sebaceous gland creates a waxy oily substance known as sebum, this slowly gets released from your sebaceous gland and flows out up through the hair follicle, moisturizing it along the way, and then seeps out in minute amounts over your skin. This also moisturizes the skin (very necessary).

However, when we are younger, our glands are working overtime and too much sebum gets made. Note: acne is not exclusive to the young but bear with me, it just means the process of acne is magnified somewhat with adolesence.

If your pores become blocked, and this doesn't matter if your young or not, the sebum can't get out.
Sebum also feeds a natural friendly skin bacteria known as skin flora. When the sebum is trapped, the flora gets too overgrown and ends up secreting a chemical that attacks the lining of your pores cells. This is where the infection and the pus and all the other things start.

So what is the message here?

Keeping your skin pores clear where ever possible is what.

How do skin pores become blocked?

Through too much grime, debris and dust, all sticking to our faces day in day out.

Poor cleansing habits is another good one.

Junk food, lack of proper nutrients, the stuff the body uses to rebuild itself and fight back against all the nasty stuff.

Cheap make up, the wrong type of moisturizer.....the list goes on.
